| HAMAP: Baumannia cicadellinicola subsp. Homalodisca coagulata complete proteome |
| Species code: | BAUCH |
| Taxonomy: | Bacteria; Proteobacteria; Gammaproteobacteria; Candidatus Baumannia (TaxID: 374463) [NEWT/ NCBI] |
| Description: | Baumannia cicadellinicola (subsp. Homalodisca coagulata) is an symbiont of the glassy-winged sharpshooter Homalodisca coagulata. H. coagulata feeds on xylem fluid, which is extremely poor in organic nutrients. It has been found to possess two symbionts, Baumannia cicadellinicola, belonging to the Gammaproteobacteria and Sulcia muelleri, belonging to the Bacteroidetes. Both symbionts are vertically transmitted in eggs and are found in a specialized bacteriome within developing nymphs and adults. They are sometimes residing in the same cell. The main role of Baumannia cicadellinicola is to provide cofactors and vitamines whereas Sulcia's role seems to provide essential amino acid to the host. Baumannia cicadellinicola is predicted to synthesize its own cell wall and plasma membrane but it is apparently unable to synthesize the LPS commonly found in the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria. It possesses genes involved in synthesis of thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, pyridoxine, biotin and folic acid. It is able to synthesize histidine, methionine if external homoserine is provided and it is able to make chorismate but not to use it as a substrate for synthesis of aromatic amino acids. |
